15 Ways to Treat Yourself in 15 minutes or less

True story…taking care of myself makes me a better mom, wife, friend, person, etc. It’s as simple as that. Another true story…it took me way too long to figure that out.

In the thick of my transition into motherhood, I realized I wasn’t putting myself first. At all. I wasn’t eating right. I wasn’t sleeping right. I wasn’t working out. Nada. I knew that something had to change. Part of my problem? When I was doing something nice for myself or something that I actually wanted to do, I feel like I should be doing something more productive – work, laundry, spending time with Grey – the list goes on. And so I did that instead. Almost 100% of the time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m obsessed with my little family. But, we all need some alone time. We all need to put ourselves first every so often. I’m slightly embarrassed proud to say that 18 months in, I’m starting to find my balance. When it comes down to it, spending 15 minutes a day on myself with a good book, a latte or a shower with AVEENO® products from Walmart makes a huge, huge difference.

Drink your favorite coffee drink

Paint your nails
When my nails are done, I feel like a much more put together human being. If you can’t make it to the salon, give yourself an at-home mani. It’s the next best thing!

Plan something to look forward to
Whether it’s trying out a new coffee shop, grabbing a drink with a friend, a date night or something else, I always feel a little better when I have something to look forward to.

Take a shower
And, I’m not talking one of those 2 minute, wash your hair with the first thing you reach for showers. I’m talking a real shower with shampoo you like and conditioner you like and no one yelling “mamaaaa” outside the shower door.

Read
Read a book, read a magazine, read those articles you bookmarked 2 months ago that you haven’t gotten around to yet. Just read something! I’m currently loving books like You are a Badass that you don’t have to read all at once. You can simply pick up this book for 15 minutes, get a little motivation and then put it down for another day. I’m also currently reading Pretty Girls, which I love so far!

Light a candle
It’s fall. Fall scents are the best scents. Light a pumpkin candle, already!

Listen to a podcast
I’ve been so, so into podcasts lately. Whether you like true crime (me!), reality TV, entrepreneurship or something totally random, there’s a podcast out there for everyone. Some of my favorites are Serial, The Vanished, Locked Up Abroad and Watch What Crappens.

Make a new playlist…blast it
There’s just something about music. My sister (she’s 10 years younger than me!) always keeps me informed on the latest jams and I love putting together new playlists to play while I’m at home, on a walk or in the car.

Order something online
Is there something you’ve had in your shopping cart for like…ever? Do you check every so often hoping that it went on sale? Buy it! Call me materialistic but I absolutely love having a good mail day to look forward to.

Eat your favorite snack
Maybe you’re a fancy cheese and cracker kinda gal. Maybe you’re chocolate chip cookie kinda gal. For the record, I am both. Whatever it is, indulge in your favorite snack and don’t share with anyone.

Walk
Throw on your tennis shoes and get some fresh air. Bonus points if you can walk by a body of water.

Get your eyebrows waxed
Just like when I paint my nails, with freshly waxed eyebrows I feel like I can take on the world.

Organize something
Okay, this may not qualify as a “treat yourself” moment for some but for me, it totally is! I feel instantly more calm and at ease when I’m organized. Even if it’s just going through one drawer, it’s therapeutic!

Unplug…or don’t
Maybe you’re on your phone all day long and a little time away with it will do you good. Maybe you never get to check during the day and you just want to aimlessly scroll through Instagram. Either way, do it.

Do nothing at all
