getting out of a style rut

Not going to lie, I’m totally in a style rut. I haven’t been feeling particularly inspired lately and I’ve been finding everything in my closet so, so boring. I’m so sick of jeans I can’t stand it. It’s totally a phase and it happens from time to time, usually when the weather totally sucks like it does right now, but it still isn’t fun…especially when you write a fashion blog. If this winter weather has you in the same state as I am, here are a couple things you can try to dig yourself out of the rut:

Rearrange and organize
The best way to rediscover things in your coset is to rearrange, reorganize and declutter. Clean out your closet, re-fold a couple drawers or reorganize your jewelry. Doing this always gets me thinking about different ways I can pair things that I already have together. While you’re at it, get rid of anything that you feel like you won’t ever wear again. Just make sure not to go overboard just because you aren’t feeling particularly inspired that day.

Wear bold lipstick
A bold lip can totally transform a look. When an outfit feels a little boring, I put on my favorite lipstick and I instantly feel a little better.

Find inspiration
Maybe you find inspiration by browsing store windows at the mall. Maybe it’s through Pinterest or Polyvore. Whatever the case, spend some time doing it. Personally, my style inspiration usually comes from magazines, Instagram, fellow bloggers and Pinterest (duh.). Spending a couple minutes looking at people’s #ootd (outfits of the day) usually gets my creative style juices flowing again.

Ask your friends for help
Have a stylish friend or two come over to help you put together a few outfits. Open a bottle of wine and have fun playing dress up. Someone else’s perspective on your closet is always good to get.

Buy a couple new things
Sometimes the only way to get out of a style rut is to buy a couple new things. For example, this week I picked up this adorable Clare V clutch that I’ve wanted for months (15% off at Shopbop, BTW!). It came in the mail and I was SO excited…my mind has been racing with a million different ways I can style it. This was a big purchase (I had been thinking about it for months, I swear!) however, you can do this with something as simple as a couple new, trendy accessories from H&M or Forever 21.

If all else fails, wear all black
When I am staring at my closet feeling like I have nothing to wear, I throw on an all black outfit. It’s classic, looks put together and never fails.

Do you ever get in style ruts? How do you get out of them?
